Never Belong is the first single out of Best Youth’s upcoming album, to be released in 2021. Coming from the synth-pop “disco noir” vibes of the previous album, Cherry Domino, the production signals a turn into a lighter, more up-beat kind of sound. This new direction still draws on the bands’ characteristic mood of intimacy and nostalgia, making you feel like the last person in the pool, alone with your thoughts while the sun comes down. It’s a song about how sometimes you feel you’re on the wrong path and the need to close some doors in order to open new ones.
Everywhere around us we feel there’s an impending sense of self-doubt, uncertainty and general anxiety that has become almost normal, and it seems to have a paralyzing effect on everyone and everything, more so this year for obvious reasons. With this song what we’re trying to do is help out with a little push: are you doing what you really want to be doing, or are you still stuck waiting for something to happen. Haven’t you had enough?
The video, directed by Vasco Mendes with the band, explores that dichotomy between inertia and thrust in a light mood, personified by two characters in a constant state of sabotage. The relationship between color, objects and wardrobe (styled by Tania Dioespirro) alludes to the color tone that symbolizes the mood and emotions present within the song: Disillusion Pink #F6ADB9
lyrics
Ah ah ah aah ah ah aaah
ah ah ah aah ah ah ah ah
Disillusion Pink is my color tonight
Drowning all my worries in neon light
Came as no surprise
Your unfaithful eyes
You never thought that it would get metaphysical
But I’m up against the wall
Ah ah ah aah ah ah aaah
ah ah ah aah ah ah ah ah
Cause baby I had enough
yeah baby I had enough
Driving by myself in the late, late night
Can’t believe it’s taking so long to get it right
I´m ready to decide
Guess I’m gonna try
To Cut through
Through you
Make new
Baby run
Ah ah ah aah ah ah aaah
ah ah ah aah ah ah ah ah
Cause baby I had enough
Yeah baby I had enough
In the shadow of the neon lights
I can see the life I wanted before
Got a feeling burning deep inside
And it’s getting too intense to ignore
I cut through, through you, cut through anybody else
I can see it now my biggest mistake would be
Never wanting more
I´ll never belong to you
Ah ah ah aah ah ah aaah
ah ah ah aah ah ah ah ah
Cause baby I had enough
yeah baby I had enough
So light up in the sky tonight
Slow dance with the satellites
Got my killer moves on strike
Doing what you want
And every single night
I dream under pale moonlight
I won’t waste away my life
Doing what you want
Cause baby I had enough
Yeah baby I had enough
Cut through
Through you
Make new
Baby run
